The Blue Flag is a world-renowned ecolabel awarded to beaches, marinas, and tourism boats that meet high environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility standards. Operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), the programme promotes sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas through strict criteria covering water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety services. With thousands of certified sites across nearly 50 countries, the Blue Flag symbol is trusted globally as a mark of excellence in environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Blue Flag International Coordinator plays a central role in coordinating and expanding the global reach of the Blue Flag programme. This position requires a dynamic, organised, and environmentally focused individual, ideally with a strong knowledge of sustainability certification systems. The coordinator will ensure operational excellence, help manage partnerships and support National Operators to maintain and grow high-quality certification outcomes for beaches, marinas, and tourism boats.

In this role, you will strengthen and develop the Blue Flag functions at FEE, maintaining a solid foundation for future growth and ensuring smooth operations that empower colleagues to perform at their best. Duties and responsibilities:

Programme coordination

·         Support and oversee national Blue Flag programmes to ensure conformity with global criteria and procedures.

·         Facilitate the application, evaluation, and award process in collaboration with the International Jury and Technical Committee.

·         Maintain accurate records of certified sites and coordinate data collection for global reporting and impact evaluation.

Capacity building and technical support

·         Organise and conduct training sessions, workshops, and webinars for national and regional stakeholders.

·         Develop and update guidance documents, operational manuals, and educational materials.

·         Provide technical assistance to new and existing countries implementing the Blue Flag programme.

Monitoring, evaluation & quality assurance

·         Implement and improve internal M&E systems to track performance indicators and compliance.

·         When needed, conduct field visits, site audits, and evaluation missions to assess Blue Flag implementation quality.

·         Coordinate with external experts and auditors as needed.

Communications and partnerships

·         Coordinate with international stakeholders including NGOs, governments, tourism boards, and coastal authorities.

·         Contribute to international communications, newsletters, and outreach initiatives.


Skills & Qualifications:


Essential

Degree in Sustainable Tourism, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Marine Studies, International Development, or a related field.

Minimum 4+ years of previous work experience in relevant areas.

Excellent organisational and administrative management skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Desirable

Familiarity with the Blue Flag programme and FEE’s broader sustainability framework.

Experience working in multicultural, international contexts.

Minimum 2 years of experience in environmental certifications in sustainable tourism.

Proven experience with certification processes (e.g., Blue Flag, Green Key).

Solid understanding of marine and coastal environment management and sustainable tourism.

Job type

Position overview

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Communications Manager to lead FEE’s global communications function. The Communications Manager will be responsible for creating and delivering compelling communications for FEE’s programmes and brands across diverse audiences and channels.

This is a hands-on role, requiring both operational delivery and strategic leadership. The Communications Manager will manage a small team and work closely with programme directors, the Executive Team, and FEE’s international network of member organisations.

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & leadership

·        Develop and implement FEE’s global communications strategy in alignment with our organisational goals and values.

·        Shape the positioning of FEE and its programmes across external and internal audiences.

·        Lead brand development and stewardship across all FEE programmes and brands (Eco-Schools, YRE, LEAF, Green Key, Blue Flag, Eco-Campus).

·        Identify opportunities for increasing FEE’s visibility, impact, and influence.

·        Support FEE’s efforts to raise funding and other resources.

 

Management & coordination

·        Lead, mentor, and manage a small communications team (coordinator and assistant).

·        Coordinate with programme directors, the CEO, Executive Team, and member organisations to ensure alignment and coherence across communications efforts. The key goal is to support growth of the programmes

·        Manage external agencies, freelancers, and partners as needed.

·        Support and network with FEE Network for coordinated comms impact.

Content & campaigns

·        Oversee the creation of high-quality content (written, visual, and multimedia) for FEE’s channels: website, social media, newsletters, reports, campaigns, and events.

·        Develop and manage integrated campaigns to support FEE’s advocacy, programmes, and partnerships.

Monitoring & evaluation

·        Develop an action plan for communications – short-term and long-term goals with KPIs.

·        Monitor and analyse the effectiveness of communications activities and channels.

·        Use insights and data to continuously improve impact and engagement.

 

Profile & qualifications

Required

·        5–10 years of progressive experience in communications, including strategic leadership and operational delivery of that at least 3 years at managerial level.

·        Experience managing a small communications team.

·        Experience working with international, multi-stakeholder networks or organisations.

·        Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills in English.

·        Comprehensive hands-on experience in digital communications, including content marketing, social media, and SEO.

·        Advanced digital skills and experience using digital tools for content creation.

·        Proven experience in brand management and visual identity.

·        Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a collaborative environment.

·        Commitment to FEE’s mission and values, including inclusion, equity, and environmental justice.
